    Thanks Julia,
I love watching the City’s, and your, evolution.
    dlt

  2. Nele Says:

Oh, yes. Having the first “grown-up” bedroom of your own certainly is something of a caesura. And having the first real kitchen, of course.

Luv your work, by the way.

  3. thomas Says:

Great photos, and what a treat to watch Vertigo for the first time!

  4. Plutos Bubbleman Says:

Yeah they did this in reverse on Planet of the Apes.

….and you cant have a grown ups room until you tidy your old one ! .

  5. Daniel Says:

lol, holy shit, if you look at the 8th and 9th photo, you see the same tree. They haven’t taken it down!

  6. Jermaine Says:

I visited the site, saw this and thought this was pretty cool with the changes and what not… then I remembered I came here lookin for another comic(Or Jack) :| … but I actually didn’t mind at all :D kudos. I should watch that movie now…

  7. Julia Says:

that’s because photos 8 & 9 are (were) my current view, not screen shots. Somehow between color distortion for web print and the fog, city hall got completely erased in that photo. creepy.

  8. Starman Says:

    Julia,
Today I spent 8 hours reading through all your comics from start to finish. I planned to write a thoughtful comment but I realized I needed to poo. Don’t worry, I’ll be back for every update!

  9. Malach the Merciless Says:

    GET A JOB HIPPIE

  10. becks Says:

thanks for doing this. you know how to please the masses.

  11. Grey Summer Says:

    Great comparisons, Julia. Thanks.

  12. Jen Says:

That’s so cool. It’s amazing to think what that same site has been over the years, back to before San Francisco was even a city. Native Americans probably killed buffalo in the crack smoking spot at some point in history.

  13. jfruh Says:

I remember I saw Vertigo at the Castro when the restored print was making a tour in the late ’90s, and Jimmy Stewart was driving through town and hit road construction at one point at THE EXACT SAME PLACE where there was a huge road construction project going on in the late ’90s. Everyone laughed!

  14. Julia Says:

ah yes, city construction incompetence lasting for 40 years is hilarious, agreed! to add to it, the abandoned lot where the church existed was in a constant state of almost starting reconstruction while I lived there. By reconstruction I mean they put up some boards and a tarp to ward off the rain and the bums were like “oh hey, free tents! crack city!”

  15. mason Says:

always lookin’ for a cozy place to smoke crack….

  16. J.M. Shiveley Says:

maybe you shouldn’t be pointing out to all the crazies on the interwebz where you live?

  17. Julia Says:

because I live 3,000 miles from there

  18. Grim Says:

    Damn…

*putting away map, clown mask and surgery tools

  19. jesus Says:

I checked out your site and used the “how it went wrong” strip as my wallpaper. Funny, then not so much, then i didn’t over think it.

    Still love your work.

I’m responding because of the Vertigo collage. We have S.F. and Napa in common. Found your site at random and I am getting around to finding something of yours to purchase for my wall.

  20. Susan Says:

I’d like to see more photos with scribbled words on them- is a nice project for days you want a break from inkiness.

  21. God Says:

Jesus isn’t buying shit, he just wants attention. Ignore him Julia.

  22. Daniel Says:

Great new banner Julia, it’s a masterpiece!

  23. michael Says:

That’s pretty cool. I’ve never lived anywhere famous.

  24. jesus Says:

goddamn, kudos to laura on the new header!

  25. alsonamedjulia Says:

ohemgee i had friends that lived in your (old) building and used to love when they’d go out of town so i could dog/housesit for them. especially after the shootings became less frequent. those apartments are beautiful.

  26. Morgan Says:

Love the new header! I’ve been reading your comics for years now and check your site weekly.
Thank you for keeping me sane and reassuring me that I’m not the only girl who would rather be throwing back some whiskey and reading a good book on a bad day (and usually on most good days…)

  27. DW Says:

    Two, no three quick comments:
    1) nothing to do with farts? I beg to differ. How about all those references to Mexican and Indian food? Subliminal fart-references there, to be sure.
    2) what, the bums couldn’t smoke crack in the church? They had to wait for it to burn down? Yes…”WAIT for it to burn down…”
    3) this kind of photo-essay is even cooler than looking up MY apartment on Google Street View and seeing my car in the parking lot. (I live a boring life, it’s true)

  28. nktoons Says:

Love the new banner :)! What’s a party without balloons…..

  29. Jennifer H Says:

Great blog entry. Really really nice. Love the before and after photos.

  30. Carolee Says:

My friend Pam lives at 1090 Eddy. I just emailed her asking if she knew that a famous cartoonist lived in the building next door.

    Heh.

But thanks for this–it’s the kind of thing that makes me so glad I moved out of nowheresville Midwesternland into overpriced but gorgeous SF.

  31. Grim Says:

    Laura Park ftw

  32. Nix Sidhe Says:

Those are pretty amazing then and nows. Do you miss SF much?

  33. Ben Says:

So, in all of this, you didn’t mention whether or not you enjoyed the movie. Vertigo is my second-favorite Hitchcock film after Rear Window. What’s your favorite?

  34. Hell's Donut House Says:

    Awesome!

  36. april Says:

wow this is a whole ‘nother world…..an’ bits of it are pretty…..

  37. Marci Says:

That was a gorgeous apartment! And I am always curious about how things looked fifty years ago and now. Very interesting.
