bedbugs can live for eighteen months without even biting someone. i used to take furniture off the street, but after my six month long battle with bedbugs in 2005, i don’t anymore. (i love your comics.)
I don’t know what it is about Greenpoint, but those polish people always seemed to be throwing away furniture when I was living there. There was also a street corner where a guy in a wife-beater and his lady were always screaming at each other.
julia did you know that’s not a tuba case? XD it’s a trombone case. i felt i should point this out in a comment. tuba are fat, trombones are thin. that is the difference.
also i love the palette & tones in that (unusually colored) water color. …unusual as in it’s unusual for them to be colored (ironic), not that the colors are unusual.
with all those books and paintings you could get taken for a cultered intellect. …and not somebody who sits around in there underwear all day eating cheese and watching Scrubs! Lovely sketches though.
I really like the watercolor of your place!! I like how you can move between super cartoony styles to more realistic watercolors, really nice! Great colors too!
Also — I used to live in Greenpoint, on Manhattan at Clay, right across from “Hotel” which seemed to be nothing more than a boarding house for semi-recovered / lapsing addicts.
This was 2001-02, so I’m wondering how the re-doing of the sketchy waterfront area is going? Is it all bourgeois condos now, blocking the city view for all the folks that have lived there their whole life? *sigh* I miss the crunching of syringes under my sneakers….
btw, did you notice the first scene in Pootie Tang was shot there?
Julia. The other day I dreamed that I was hanging out with you and Laura Park, Kate Beaton, Liz Prince and some other awesome comic creator chicks. You guys were all being polite to me but in “reality” you were just frustrated with having a fan hanging around.
In real reality I think I’m better than everybody. See the effect you have on me?
That “towel rack” looks suspiciously like a shoe rack that I bought at IKEA years ago. Which leads me to hope that you cleaned it off before putting cookware on it.
Then again, you found it on the street, so I guess you would.
Wonderful watercolor, I love the color of the walls. Every rental Ive ever lived in has had the same strange biege/putty colored walls. In my case, the same carpeting has been following me for years as well. always an odd short blue/grey carpet.
Person I don’t know! I don’t know what it is, but something about this is entirely excellent. Thank you for sharing! Were the sketches meant to go together or was it just a happy accident of sticking it all in a single post?
I am 100% for scavenging. If its free and suits the need it’s mine. I still use a bedside table I found walking the dog 2 or 3 years ago. The best part of that is when its time to get rid of it, I have no problem setting it outside on the curb.
I like your christmas lights. My uncle gave me some that were black lights and had faux chinese lantern ball paper things around them… wonder where they ended up…
The lack of a television in that drawing causes me immense glee.

the last drawing is wonderful! i want to jump inside of it and stay there forever.

you’re such an awesome illustrator. i like the brown and blue hues that make me feel it’s real. How do you do that?

Can there be a battle of skill and wits between Cartulia and Realistic Julia? I’m curious to see who would win.

Man that drawing is rad as heck.

Nice complementary color scheme. Feels inviting and slightly 1980’s.
