awww, but I could so go for a nice Rosé! Okay, so that’s a lie… but vodka and cran is pinkish and I could bathe in that shit.
Also, I’d say that advice is good for people of all genders.

I agree with the book but i’m not old enough to drink beer….awesome comics as usual in COLOR!!

I just broke up with my long-term boyfriend, so I’m looking at a lot of nights spent drowning my sorrows in good literature and bad liquor. I’ll definitely check out the books on your list. In case you need any recommendations, here are some of my favorites. Be forewarned: All of these books will change your life and/or make you weep like a little girl:
The Road, Cormac McCarthy
The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint Exupery
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Annie Dillard
Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, Janisse Ray
Maus, Art Spiegelman
Concerning the Spiritual in Art, Wassily Kandinsky
Rule of the Bone, Russell Banks

I don’t read real books, only pulp science fiction and short stories. And comic books.
You’re probably going to get an “I’d bone you” from someone, so I’ll toss my hat in.
“Gads! Miss, I do believe I would enjoy if I might bone your hand! I could not help but notice the leadened side of your palm and calluses betwixt your fingers and I must admit it has me all a titter! So please would I meet you at the destination of your choice so as to complete a high-school hand-boning? I shall bring the U.S. currencies necessary and procure a portable vat of petroleum intercourse jellies upon request!”
There.
How long after reading a book does it take before you feel compelled to read it again? It feels like its been years since I read a book twice.

Maybe if you’d gone with “Big Trouble in Little China”, the movie experiment would’ve gone better. Also, nachos instead of ice cream.
February 25th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
“Big Trouble in Little China”–YES!!!
February 25th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Or “Tremors”!!!
February 25th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Yeah I used to drown my sorrows with whiskey but I had to quit. It was a bitch but I feel a lot better and don’t nearly get depressed as often.

a bottle of 1800 is my new best friend
February 25th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
You’ve read The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas?! That is so fucking dope! I loan my copy out to people all the time. Davy Rothbart is the sweetest bastard you will ever meet.
February 25th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
The Glass Castle was great. So entertaining.

Thanks for the book recommendations. I added most of them to my goodreads account and tagged them to-read, as if I didn’t have enough to read. I second the recommendation of The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I’d also like to add, if I may, Downtown Owl by Chuck Klosterman, The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, and Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. All excellent!
Btw, if you’re on goodreads, feel free to add me as a friend here. If you aren’t, you may like to join as it’s a good place to see what others are currently reading, what they plan to read, and their thoughts and reviews on what they have read. And, it’s free!

Books and booze? That sounds like my kinda night.
Thanks for the reading suggestions! Time to go to the library…
Even though half my bed is already covered in books, similar to the fashion you have described in the past…*sighs*

That is truly sound advice, Julia. I really need to shift to your plan and away from my current ‘drink beer and pass out halfway through The Daily Show’ regime.

I actually live off the road that Allison Smith’s brother had his accident on, and every time it rains and I go down that hill, I’m terrified…

I love Burn Collector! Al Burian was kind of my hero for a minute. Actually once I wore an I Heart Al Burian shirt to a Milemarker show and he saw it and obviously thought I was creepy, lol. good times…
oh yeah & your strip is good too.

I liked The Glass Castle, too. I suppose one would only be able to write about the humiliations and unpleasant experiences, with calm and compassion, when years have passed and he/she is in a much better place. When the experiences are present tense, I’m not sure one would want to open up or let in kindness and helping hands, unless that person has no aspirations, sense of independence or talent but self-pity. In which case, he/she would unlikely become an eloquent writer.

I liked the Lone Surfer. It was really an unexpectedly dark book considering Found is such a light read, and Davy is a pretty funny guy.

just thought you’d like to know:
“I Saw You” managed to make it into a borders’ express in downtown philadelphia. Three little copies tucked on a bottom shelf next to the calvin & hobbes collections. seemed…professional.
February 25th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
You’re wise, Wertz! I shall certainly be checking out your literary recommendations.
(And for the record, my drink of choice is whiskey.)
February 25th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
I like to drown my sorrows in beer and/or Chunky Monkey, whichever is closer.
February 25th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
I loved the ‘Glass Castle’. My local bookstore here in SF has been giving me some fantastic recomendations lately - check out “The Corrections”, by Johnathan Franzen, “A Fraction of a Whole” by Stephen Toltz, and “A Dirty Job” by Christopher More (who is from SF, tells a story while taking the reader through a weird and cosmic journey through the city…from the Mission to Chinatown).

Oh and I missed your mention of Roz Chast. She is bizarre delightful! She went to my college way back when, but I never got the chance to meet here when she came and spoke.
February 25th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
That Bill Peet book is one of my all time favorites. I just went through the process of getting ALL of his children’s books. That guy was a flippin genius.
February 25th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
That last panel needs to be on a t-shirt!
February 25th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Forgot to mention that one of my fave books is Daniel Clowes’s “Ghost World,” whose story happens to start with an “I saw you” ad!
February 25th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Does that tv response say “thanks dumpy but witty best friend or roommate who is actually HOTTER than me”?
February 25th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
The only person I know who eats ice cream and watches movies when they’re lonely is my friend Frankie. And he’s most defiantly not a female.
Silly gender roles!
February 26th, 2009 at 2:13 am
Can’t do bourbon yet. I still heart beer 2 much.
February 26th, 2009 at 8:18 am
when i was 10 my teacher had a shelf with every bill peet book published at the time and she would read us one a week, that bio was a great read too, i especially like the bit about walt disney being a bit of a dick.

Gotta love this, but I prefer drinking alone in the woods, sitting some where high up in a tree. Barring that some where in a cave, or better yet fishing (booze of choice is home brewed honey wine, or beer, but most anything will do in the right amounts). I reserve book reading for after dark if I can help it, but must admit to getting caught up in a good book to the point of having neglected chores before. Thanks for the reading list, will have to check it out.
February 26th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
how about some ernest and julio gallo mixed with some coca-cola….NO ICE PLEASE!!,,,,,mmmmmm…..
February 26th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Oooh. Orange juice+vodka or tequila or rum+cherry 7 up makes a really fucking delicious drink, but it’s kind of a pink color.
If you ever want to visit Alaska for one reason or another, you can crash on my couch and hang out with my cats. I really enjoy your work and as soon as I get my tax return I am buying your books.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:28 am
Glass Castle was awesome.
February 27th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
I’d rather get drunk than fat.
February 27th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
You make me feel better about my shitty life.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:14 am
Everyone knows that Daniel Pinkwater books are the best for burrowing into. He is a god among men.
Also, WC Fields movies work better than this newer trash. Nothing like Vaudevillian humour to send you into stitches.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:34 am
SoCo and trashy novels Do make me feel better;)
Glad you’re snapping out of it.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

@Penelope: The Road was an amazing book! I just finished it. I’d add After Dark, by Haruki Murakami. Cheers!
