old comic, new plans
Thursday, September 18th, 2008the short of it is that while my roommate Gabe is good people and my office space was cute, I got a great deal on a quiet little studio in Greenpoint, which is pretty much what I’ve wanted since I moved to Brooklyn but thought I’d never get it. I thought I’d never be able to afford to live alone in Brooklyn, and now I actually get to do it. And I gotta say, I am NOT sad to leave Williamsburg (more specifically Bedford Ave) I always felt awkward here, I’m not into the scene at all and frankly, I found the whole north Williamsburg area to be pretty dull. I’m not going to get into some gentrification rant here (please don’t any commentors either, I’m so sick of the topic) but I will say this about it: it’s fucking boring! Greenpoint borders Williamsburg and my new place is only a mile away, but it’s a world of difference up there. And best of all, I’ll have windows again. natural light! fancy that! maybe i will grow up finally.
haha yeah right.

c’mon scanners cost like 40 bucks at best buy and like 20 bucks on craigslist. Forgo a bottle of makers for a few days.

It sucks that the lack of scanner is still an issue, but I was stoked to see a new comic up!
September 18th, 2008 at 10:35 am
well the thing is that I have a new (used) scanner now, but it’s missing the power chord. Pending finding it or replacing it, it’s silly to buy another scanner so I’ll just wait. maybe run some older shit in the mean time.

that last frame is why i keep coming back. good luck with the apartment move too!
September 18th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Is that seriously all you need? I have powercords galore (due to being “that guy” who always fixes other people’s computers).
Just let me know what kind you need (a picture would work)..
September 18th, 2008 at 10:57 am
what i want to know is when can we expect that big long story you say you were working on?
I would love to see that from you. GO JULIA!
September 18th, 2008 at 11:06 am
you won’t ever see the long stories. they’re going to be in a book. fuck the internet.
September 18th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Dear Julia, you’re doing great. You’re an inspiration to all who wanted to move somewhere cool and be an artist…I unfortunately cannot do that as I live in Canada…

Geez, between your work and housing upheavals, you make ME look settled. And I’m a damned hobo.
September 18th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Hoooray new (old) comic! Oh joy!
I’m going to try and donate to fart party today in hopes that it stimulates the economy! Or the fart-conomy!
September 18th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
wow a new one! Really like your stuff. Hope you will be able to fix your scanner trouble soon. good luck with your moving efforts. Greenpoint is much more exciting. Good bars and an excellent gender mixture
bye bye

So I was reading Luann this morning and it gave me an idea. Yeah, I read Luann…
Anyway, Luann’s brother Brad is trying to raise money for the fire station he works at. His Eddie Haskell-esque buddy TJ then gave him the idea of making a hot firefighters calendar.
Well, I think it’s about time you put together a ‘Hot Brooklyn Cartoonists’ calendar, Julia. You got 3 and half months to throw that together. And make sure you use laminated paper so I can bring it in the shower with me.
September 18th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
sounds like a sweet deal. plus, you’ll at least have plenty of sunshine even when things are shitty, so it’ll seem less shitty by default (so we hope).
good luck with the move and all.

When the book comes out, make your internet readers buy it (or else).
I’m exited to hear about a book, and hopefully your new living arrangement will be awesome.
September 18th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
i’m pretty sure it will be awesome, if only because it means i dont have to clean up after myself and it’ll be a good working environment. it might be so good that I get all sappy and start loving everything again. but, knowing my life, there will be probably be something terribly wrong with it and it’ll flood every two months or be full of mice. It’s definitely not the place I want to grow old in, or spend more than a five years in, but the fact that I’m even thinking beyond a few months is pretty amazing.

Welcome to the Greenpoint club. Best neighborhood ever.
September 18th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Congratulations on the place in Greenpoint. I live in a particularly stark corner of Bushwick and on Saturday mornings I like to ride my bike up through Greenpoint because it’s nearby and 100% more pleasant than Williamsburg and the surrounding area.

Does EVERYONE live in NYC?
I’m starting to think that if a nuke went off in NYC and Portland, OR, then the competition would be wiped out and my cartoon skills would all of a sudden become a hot commodity. Kinda like gold, or people who know how to drive a manual transmission.

Heck yeah Greenpoint is great! ive been here a year and i love it. welcome to the nieghborhood.
September 19th, 2008 at 1:23 am
“buy toilet paper+coffee” hahaha
they go together those two, don’t they..
September 19th, 2008 at 7:32 am
(what meant was a Book.) And yes screw the internet.
September 19th, 2008 at 8:54 am
i’m not sure when I’ll finish the longer stories book. It will probably take me at least a year, maybe more, especially if things are as rocky as they’ve been this past year, but living in the studio in greenpoint should help calm things down a bit and I can get more work done. i hope…

Why did my comment get remove?
September 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
huh, that’s weird. you comment shows up in my email and dashboard, but not on the site. I don’t know.
September 19th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Damn. I was just getting ready to send a bottle of whiskey in the mail. Now i have to wait until I get your change of address notice!

Somehow I imagine Julia Wertz’s studio apartment to be like this one in this movie I just watched on Encore called ‘Winter Passing’. Then Julia will slam her motherfucking drawing hand in a drawer for being a curse on her. Then maybe she will go drown a kitten in the Hudson River. If you haven’t seen this movie, then I recommend it. But make sure you’re good and drunk first. It made me instantly relate to it because my non-immediate family in the UP of Michigan, where the story takes place, are the Goddamn same.

Greenpoint is an amazing little town. I just moved here from across town three weeks ago and I’m super thrilled about it.
Except the G train. I’m not thrilled about that at all.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:51 am
Hey,
What kind of scanner cable do you need? I might have one for you…
