unsettling news

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Kevin writes a weekly newspaper column, you can read his last one about his cancer here. I don’t intend on making comics about it, but I’d encourage you to become a regular reader of his column because it’s most enjoyable. One might be so bold as to liken it to a vastly more mature, broad, typed version of Fart Party, plus my ma and little bro appear regularly in it too. It goes up online every Sunday.

This is tragic but very nicely done. I hope your stepdad recovers quickly.

I finally bought your book, and I just got it in the mail. I have an awesome night of reading ahead of me.

  5. Kate Says:

i have had a really similar, if more self involved, trajectory; i moved back home to new york because of my father’s series of (i know this sounds crazy but its true) minor bouts with cancer after a few years in sf and, despite family issues and anything that was going on around me, spent the first two years back here wallowing in missing the west coast self pity. then, a few months ago, it became clear that my dad’s cancer had returned and was no longer minor. suddenly i am so glad i have been back here, even if i’ve been a little shit about it, and am so glad i am still here to be with him. anyway; i will keep you and your family in my thoughts and hope for the best for your stepfather.

when i was younger i used to be really scared of spiders, then when i was a teenager my dad died… i guess im saying no matter how bad something is, be grateful, cos it can always get a whole lot worse.
hope your family’s ok. all the best, big pete.

  7. dan Says:

Damn, I’m sorry to hear about the diagnosis. It sounds like you’ve got some reasons to be optimistic though. From what your step-dad wrote in the article, he’s got a good gameplan and it’s manageable. Here’s to him beating it into remission! all the best.

  8. Adam Says:

Good thoughts and best wishes to your stepdad.

  9. xadrian Says:

Ex-wife was just diagnosed with cervical cancer two weeks ago. They were able to get it all this time, but now she has the big C on her.

I hope it’s early. I hope they’re able to help him. I hope whatever time is left for him is rewarding and happy. Positive thoughts and zen popsicles to you and yours.

  10. Sue Says:

That is a great saying by your grandmother. After suddenly losing one of my best friends last summer, I’ve become such an optimistic, happier person. Things can always be worse.

    Hey,

I just had a similar experience. My dad went in to hospital last week for a lung infection, turns out he’s got lung cancer. BIG f&cking lung cancer.

I hope it all turns out better for you than it did for me. Hang in there.
