[...] Julia Wertz. Remember this name. If my bets are right, we’ll be reading her name next to the greats of modern comics like Daniel Clowes, Craig Thompson, Lynda Barry, and R. Crumb. Wertz’s confessional-slash-observational-slash-toilet humor panel doodle is entitled “The Fart Party” Based in San Francisco, The Fart Party tells of the everyday, thoughts, trials and tribulations of the author. But thats been done right? Confessional comics not a new development as far as contemporary comics go. What sets Wertz apart is the sheer quality of her comics. Nostalgic, and hedonistic, it oozes the essence of hipster without the elitism and snobbery usually associated with the genre. With a simple, iconic illustration style, Julia is self deprecating and adorable all at once. Even in the comics that end up as stick figure doodles (posted when she’s out of town or short of time) exude the feel of the finished comics and doesn’t take away from the comic. Completely aware of the medium, Julia plays with the fourth wall instead of breaking it. In one comic a friend she’s drinking with a friend whom she’s just told of her plans to write and draw comics. “But you can’t draw,” the friend says. The last panel is rendered in a caricatured version of her stick style in which she responds, “Says who?” [...]

I was a spaz as a child, also.
Especially summer camp, man. I was the craziest mother fucka there.
The “popular girls” pushed me in the mud and the boys threw rocks at me.
(the latter was probably just flirting. Hell maybe the former, too.)
